ITEM # Unknown Worlds of Science Fiction Vol. 1 #1 – 6 (1975)

The 1975 follow-up to Marvel Comics’ ill-fated Worlds Unknown, Unknown Worlds of Science Fiction picked up where its predecessor left off. Packaged in the much more flattering $1 black and white magazine format, the bimonthly publication contained a number of self contained stories (approximately 10 per issue) revolving around one central theme: science fiction. Each issue was crafted by some of the genre’s greatest writers. Names like Harlan Ellison, Roger Zelazny and “Chip” Delany frequented the pages within.

ITEM # Beyond the Grave #1 – 17

Ghosts, witches, and demons dominate the pages of this series. Its stories are quite charming and usually ironic. For instance, a coven of witches and warlocks finds out that there is more to their sacrificial victim than they bargained for. A sickly old man finds the ideal place to die, and an overly curious writer discovers that a creepy castle is not abandoned after all. Though many of the tales may seem clichéd, the stories are always entertaining, classic, and in a horrifying sort of way, wholesome.

ITEM # Richard Dragon Kung-Fu Fighter #1 – 18 (1975-1977)

Richard Dragon is a fictional character created by Dennis O’Neil and Jim Berry in the novel Dragon’s Fists (1974) under the pseudonym “Jim Dennis.” O’Neil later adapted the character for DC Comics in the comic book Richard Dragon, Kung Fu Fighter. In the mid 1970’s Kung Fu was popular in TV and films and so DC got on board with this martial arts series. Richard Dragon Kung Fu Fighter lasted a reasonable 18 issues before being beaten by the DC Implosion, which claimed 31 titles in the late 1970’s.

ITEM # Valley of the Dinosaurs #1 – 11 (1975-1976)

While exploring an uncharted leg of the Amazon River, Professor John Butler and his family are suddenly caught in a giant whirlpool and cast away into a mysterious prehistoric valley. Saved and befriended by a caveman family, the Butlers try to survive in their strange new surroundings. Charlton’s adaptation of the 1970s Hanna Barbera’s Valley of the Dinosaurs mimics the simple art and stories of the Saturday morning cartoon on which it is based. The stories are heavy on family togetherness and goofy, cartoonish dinosaurs. Later issues feature some extremely early work by John Byrne.

ITEM # 1st Issue Special #1 – 13 (1975-1976)

1st Issue Special was a try-out book in which a different character or team would headline each issue, a Bronze Age successor of the Silver Age title Showcase. Its most successful feature was Warlord, who debuted in issue #8 and went on to have his own long running series which lasted for over 130 issues. Familiar faces appearing in this title included Metamorpho, The Creeper and Doctor Fate. The title’s final issue also launched the return of the New Gods, who branched out into an ongoing series of their own.

ITEM # Doomsday + 1 #1 – 12 (1975-1979)

Early John Byrne art applied to the time-honored cliché of astronauts returning to a post-nuclear-devastated Earth and fighting assorted mutants, monsters, and aliens. Joe Gill wrote the early issues, with Byrne taking over later. Issues #7–12 reprint the original series, and new stories can be found in #4–5 of the Charlton house fanzine Charlton Bullseye.
