Kissyfur

The story is based on the animated television series Kissyfur, which aired in the mid-1980s as part of NBC’s Saturday morning cartoon lineup. Created by Phil Mendez, the show followed the adventures of a little bear cub named Kissyfur and his father Gus, who escape from the circus to start a new life in the swamp. There, they build a community with other animal characters while learning about friendship, trust, and family bonds.

The comic adaptation captures the same lighthearted and warm tone of the cartoon. It features Gus as a loving but clumsy father, and Kissyfur as the playful and brave cub, always ready for new adventures with his friends—including a rabbit, a piglet, and other cheerful swamp dwellers. The art style is colorful and playful, echoing the animated look of the series, making it appealing to children and nostalgic fans alike.

As with many cartoon-to-comic adaptations of the 1980s, this issue sought to extend the popularity of the TV show into print form, giving fans an additional way to connect with the characters they loved on Saturday mornings. Today, Kissyfur comics are remembered as part of the era when DC Comics experimented with bringing animated favorites into comic book form, standing alongside other adaptations of beloved cartoons.

ITEM # Epicurus the Sage # 1 - 2

"Epicurus the Sage" is a witty, philosophical comic book series written by William Messner-Loebs and illustrated by Sam Kieth, originally published by Piranha Press, an experimental imprint of DC Comics. The series blends humor, history, and classical philosophy in a uniquely entertaining way.

🧠 Overview

Set in ancient Greece, Epicurus the Sage reimagines the legendary philosopher Epicurus as a wandering thinker who questions the world around him with charm, wit, and a good deal of sarcasm. The comic pokes fun at the great minds of Western thought—Plato, Aristotle, Socrates, and even Alexander the Great—portraying them as flawed, egotistical, or hilariously misguided.

Rather than a dry philosophical treatise, the series offers a comedic and insightful take on the nature of truth, knowledge, power, and belief. Epicurus himself serves as the calm center in a world full of madness, trying to live a life of reason and pleasure while surrounded by chaos and contradiction.

🎨 Art and Style

The artwork by Sam Kieth is distinctive—exaggerated, expressive, and filled with visual gags. His characters have a wild, rubbery look that fits perfectly with the absurdity of the situations they face. The visual tone balances ancient architecture with cartoonish flair, creating a world that feels both timeless and fantastically strange.

🏛️ Themes

The comic explores:

  • The clash between rational thought and dogmatic tradition.

  • The absurdities of politics, war, and religion.

  • The pursuit of a simple, meaningful life, inspired by Epicurean philosophy.

Despite the humor, there’s a sincere philosophical core: it invites readers to reflect on how we think, what we value, and how society shapes our beliefs.

📚 Legacy

"Epicurus the Sage" remains a cult classic, admired by fans of alternative comics and intellectual satire. It’s not just funny—it’s clever, thought-provoking, and refreshingly irreverent. It serves as both an homage and a parody of classical wisdom, making it accessible even to those unfamiliar with philosophy.

ITEM # Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures #1 – 72 (1989-1995)

Published by Archie Comics, this comic was based on mainstream version of the turtles. It started out simply retelling episodes of the then popular animated series but with the fifth issue the book branched out into telling it’s own stories. Primarily written by Dean Clarrain the stories would often have an underlying environmentalist themes, over time the storylines grew darker and more mature. The series drew negative press when a storyline saw the death of the turtle’s allies The Mighty Mutanimals in a massacre.
The three part “Future Shark Trilogy” which saw the turtles, Splinter and their ally Ninjara come to the aid of the older turtles in dystopian future proved popular with fans and elements and characters from the story were revisited many times in the series. For five issues the comic was renamed Cyber Samurai Mutant Ninja Turtles in a storyline that was set soley in the aforementioned future. By now the turtles fad of the eighties and early nineties had faded which meant lagging sales. Mirage wanting to put out their own color TMNT book made the publishers nervous of competition leading them to consider cancellation. Growing frustration of darker storylines came to a head when Clarrain and co plotter and artist Chris Allen submitted a time travel story involving the the future turtles Archie was displeased. The covers for the seven part epic “Forever War” were made with the belief that this would be final storyline of the series. Clarrain and Allen were dropped from the book and it was cancelled two issues later with the final storyline focused on a present Splinter telling the story of how pre-teen turtles picked their weapons written by Steve Sullivan and drawn by Brian Thomas.
