It was cancelled when Street and Smith, in the midst of financial difficulties, stopped publishing all comics in 1949. Doc Stearn…Mr. Monster is a fictional character comic book superhero created by Michael T. Gilbert, most recently published by Dark Horse Comics. The character first appeared in Pacific Comics Vanguard Illustrated #7 (July 1984). Later the character graduated to his own monthly series Doc Stearn…Mr. Monster from Eclipse Comics. Mr. Monster was derived from an old 1940’s character created by Fred Kelly who appeared only twice in 1940s Canadian comic books (Triumph Comics #31, 1946, and Super-Duper Comics #3, 1947), and who had subsequently lapsed into public domain. Gilbert heavily revised the character creating a Horror/Humor hybrid which often featured heavy satire of both the horror genre and superhero comics in general.

ITEM # Mystery Tales #1 – 54 (1952-1957)

Mystery Tales was one of many titles Atlas hurried to the stands in the wake of the success of EC’s “New Trend” horror comics of the early 50s. Early issues featured Atlas’s typical heavy-handed mix of gory and gruesome fare, rendered by a roster of talent including Matt Fox, a young Gene Colan, Bill Everett, and the great Joe Maneely. The arrival of the Comics Code banished the buckets of blood, and the focus shifted to tales of suspense and (like the title says) mystery. By 1957, Atlas had hit the skids and cut back on all but a few titles. Mystery Tales did not survive the implosion, though stories from its pages have occasionally been reprinted in Marvel horror titles from the 70s such as Dead of Night and Supernatural Tales.

ITEM # Weird Mystery Tales #1 – 24 (1972-1975)

DC’s latest horror anthology didn’t enjoy as long a life as the company’s other Weird themed titles. However, the host that was first presented ina framing sequence by author Marv Wolfman and artist Bernie Wrightson would provide endless creative material for Neil Gaiman’s “The Sandman” series decades later. Cloaked in a dark robe and cowl, Destiny’s stories came from a large book chained to him, containing events past, present and future. Despite his blindness, nothing escaped his notice – except, perhaps, the fact that the biblical Eve would replace him as the series’ host after fourteen issues.
