ITEM # The Recount – Preamble

Scout's hit series is back! Set years before the shocking events of The Recount, Preamble details the life of Phil Pontus, the tragic death of his mother, his military service and subsequent decision to enter politics, his assent to the office of Vice President, and the terrible events that culminated in his assumption of leadership of a terrorist group known only as "The Masses."

ITEM # The Maze Agency

  • Genre: Mystery, Crime, Detective Fiction

  • First Published: The series originally debuted in 1988 under Comico Comics, later moving to Innovation Publishing and then IDW before this current version by Scout Comics.

  • Creators:

    • Writer: Mike W. Barr (known for his work on Batman and Camelot 3000)

    • Original Artist: Adam Hughes (who got his start here), although this current version features Silvano Beltramo on art.

Plot Summary:

"The Maze Agency" follows:

  • Jennifer Mays: A tough and brilliant private investigator, and

  • Gabriel Webb: Her partner, a true crime writer with a talent for solving mysteries.

Together, they tackle complex murder cases in the classic whodunit style, often involving locked rooms, cryptic clues, and misdirection — very much in the tradition of Agatha Christie and Ellery Queen.

What sets the comic apart is:

  • It’s a "fair play" mystery: Readers are given all the clues needed to solve the case alongside the protagonists.

  • It blends detective drama with a light romantic subplot between Jennifer and Gabriel.

  • Why It’s Notable:
  • One of the rare comics that focuses on classic mystery-solving rather than action or superhero themes.

  • Revered for intelligent plotting, solid character chemistry, and its nod to Golden Age detective fiction.

  • It helped launch the career of artist Adam Hughes.

  • The new Scout Comics revival brings a more modern art style while honoring the spirit of the original.
