ITEM # Coventry # 1 - 3

Coventry Comic

Coventry is an independent comic series published by Image Comics in 1999. Created and written by Todd McFarlane with art by different collaborators, the series presents a dark and satirical urban fantasy setting. Mixing elements of myth, folklore, and gritty street life, Coventry explores a hidden city where supernatural creatures coexist with the human underworld, governed by their own brutal codes. Its distinctive covers and surreal imagery—featuring anthropomorphic figures, twisted humor, and symbolic motifs—made it stand out in the late 1990s indie comic scene. Though short-lived, the series is remembered for its bold visual style and its contribution to the era’s experimentation beyond mainstream superhero narratives.

ITEM # Sunday

Sunday by Schrauwen

Sunday follows, over the course of one day, the stream of consciousness of a fictionalized version of the author’s cousin, Thibault. On the day of his girlfriend’s return from an extended trip, Thibault wakes up, does nothing, gets James Brown stuck in his head, drinks and smokes, grows paranoid about his relationship, struggles to compose text messages, and watches The Da Vinci Code, all the while avoiding anyone and everyone, descending deeper into his own thoughts and fears.

Meanwhile, a former crush and another cousin of Thibault’s plan a surprise birthday for him, sending the external and internal on a collision course. Schrauwen’s brilliant comic timing and formal mastery transcend the quotidian nature of the plot. Through use of color, flashback, and the dissonance between text and image, the ways in which Schrauwen layers a depiction of human consciousness as lines on paper are infused heavily with slapstick and white-knuckle tension, making for an exhilarating read and breathtaking use of the comics medium.

ITEM # My Time Machine

My Time Machine

Trapped in a glitchy time machine at the end of the world, a strange creature banging unnervingly at the door, what else is an exhausted amateur time traveler to do but sit back and play her concertina?

Having inherited the blueprints designed by the Time Traveler of H.G. Wells' historical account, our curious and all-too-human adventurer enlists her genius ex-husband to construct a modern version of the time machine. Torn between wanting to fix the past and needing to know what lies ahead, she decides to see how our follies will play out in order to bring back information that might help save civilization from itself.

She anticipates trouble, but it's far worse — not only has humanity failed to mitigate climate change, but by 2035 the world has succumbed to fascism. Then, by 2045, it has devolved to anarchy. Intrigued by the possibilities detailed in Wells' book, she decides to visit the year 802,701 to verify the original Traveler's tale. In that inexplicably lush land she encounters enemies that propel her to the earth's last, hellish days.

Carol Lay's My Time Machine is serious and funny, a sly cautionary political satire, and a rollicking time travel story full of puzzling paradoxes, edge-of-your-seat suspense, breezy badinage, and a deeply felt wonder at the universe.

ITEM # Mothballs

Mothballs

In this moving family saga, a teenage woman uncovers the hushed history of sexual violence that shattered her grandmother's life. Buenos Aires, 2001. This conspicuous absence sparks the curiosity of her 19-year-old granddaughter, Rocio, who moves into the house her grandmother has left her. In this home haunted by memories, she delves into Vilma's life and uncovers a family history shrouded in tragedy.

Moving seamlessly between Italy at the beginning of the 20th century and Argentina at the beginning of the 21st century, Mothballs draws a poetic comparison between the lives of grandmother and granddaughter. ITEM # Night Drive

Richard Sala’s rare, long out-of-print self-published comic took him to the pages of Raw and from there to MTV, where the creation of “Invisible Hands” for MTV’s Liquid Television secured him a place among our finest creators of idiosyncratic comics and art.

When Richard Sala passed away in 2020, he left behind a uniquely eldritch body of graphic novels and illustrations, fueled by macabre whimsy and a love of dark mysteries and vintage monsters. Like David Lynch, Sala was a painter who turned to a storytelling medium that allowed him to create inventive narratives inspired by such disparate influences as French crime fiction, the grim humor of Charles Addams, the surreal poetry of Jorge Luis Borges, and his own penchant for all things gleefully ghoulish and sinister.

Originally self-published in an edition of 500 copies in 1984, Night Drive signaled the creative emergence of a singular talent finding his footing with the surety of an artist equipped with the innate mastery of his craft and vision. Edited by longtime Sala friend Dana Marie Andra (Web of Horror) and designed by Sala’s friend and fellow cartoonist Daniel Clowes (Monica, Ghost World), this graphic novella is rounded out with rare artwork, interviews with Sala about the book, and an essay by Andra.

ITEM # The Secret History of Marvel Comics

The Secret History of Marvel Comics digs back to the 1930s when Marvel Comics wasn't just a comic-book producing company. Marvel Comics owner Martin Goodman had tentacles into a publishing world that might have made that era’s conservative American parents lynch him on his front porch. Marvel was but a small part of Goodman’s publishing empire, which had begun years before he published his first comic book. Goodman mostly published lurid and sensationalistic story books (known as “pulps”) and magazines, featuring sexually-charged detective and romance short fiction, and celebrity gossip scandal sheets. And artists like Jack Kirby, who was producing Captain America for eight-year-olds, were simultaneously dipping their toes in both ponds. The Secret History of Marvel Comics tells this parallel story of 1930s/40s Marvel Comics sharing offices with those Goodman publications not quite fit for children. The book also features a comprehensive display of the artwork produced for Goodman’s other enterprises by Marvel Comics artists such as Jack Kirby and Joe Simon, Alex Schomburg, Bill Everett, Al Jaffee, and Dan DeCarlo, plus the very best pulp artists in the field, including Norman Saunders, John Walter Scott, Hans Wesso, L.F. Bjorklund, and Marvel Comics #1 cover artist Frank R. Paul. Goodman’s magazines also featured cover stories on celebrities such as Jackie Gleason, Elizabeth Taylor, Liberace, and Sophia Loren, as well as contributions from famous literary and social figures such as Isaac Asimov, Theodore Sturgeon, and L. Ron Hubbard.

Over his 70-year career in comics, he has worked as an artist, an editor, a publisher, an entrepreneur, and a cartooning auteur. The Art of Joe Kubert is a deluxe, full-color book that honors this legendary creator with beautifully reproduced artwork from every phase of his career as well as critical commentary by the book’s editor, comics historian and Kubert biographer Bill Schelly.

ITEM # Tedward

Tedward Cover

Meet Tedward — a blockhead with a heart of gold, and a talent for making bad situations worse.

Tedward is, in many ways, the quintessential ‘lovable loser’ — an almost literal blockhead and mangenue in the grand tradition of Pee-Wee Herman, Candide, and Flakey Foont, affording his creator the perfect vehicle to indulge his brilliantly absurdist storytelling instincts.

Tedward’s susceptibility to temptation, exploitation (capitalistic or sexual), and misplaced trust continually lands him in ridiculous and hilarious situations, be they scatological, orgiastic, violent, or mundane. His heart of gold never wavers through it all.

Tedward is the debut collection from British-born Philadelphia cartoonist Josh Pettinger. A spiritual cousin to the humor of Simon Hanselmann and Daniel Clowes, Pettinger’s singularity of tone and style in these episodic comedies mark him as a master cartoonist just entering his prime.
